Zimmerpflanzen

The place where gardeners go – since 1894.

Switzerland’s most typical English-style Garden-Centre

Founded in 1894, Ernst Meier AG is a family business which initially focussed on seeds. In 1964 it opened Tann-Rüti garden centre near Zurich which has become the best-known independent garden centre in German-speaking Switzerland.

The new garden centre has opened its doors for the first time on 1 March 2011. It is known simply as ‘Meier’, with the strap-line ‘meeting place for keen gardeners’. Exceptional quality service and advice are of paramount importance to the Meier family, with three generations on hand in the garden centre to answer customers’ questions.

Garden courses in English

Meanwhile we are becoming a meeting place for British Expatriats an other English-speaking garden enthusiasts from all over the world. According to our English slogan, Meier - the place where gardeners go '.

We therefore offer garden courses in English – also on request, minimum 6 persons. Stuar Bell, our English plant consultant and head of department, leads the way through the most important topics of the garden season with lots of charm and know-how.

He welcomes you to afternoon tea and cake. Stuart will give an informative and fun talk about plants, there uses, how to care for and introduce some new unusual types with a bit of a practical demonstration.

Diversity from our own nursery

The total surface area of the garden centre is 37,000 sqm. The space dedicated to sales can be broken down as follows: indoors (non glass-house) – 3,000 sqm; glass-house - 4,700 sqm (2,600 sqm frost free, 800sqm temperate, 1,300 sqm heated); and outside - 8,000 sqm. There is a 2,300 sqm show garden and a 1,000 sqm restaurant with mountain views. In addition, the garden centre has a 2,000 sqm warehouse, 1,000 sqm glass-house delivery area, 500 sqm seminar rooms and 327 car park spaces.

A particular feature of the garden centre is the glass-house which at 7,589 sqm is bigger than a football field. It has an ‘open-sky’ roof which can be fully opened (1,728sqm) or part opened (432sqm) to meet the needs of the plants and for the comfort of customers. This is the first ‘open-sky’ roof of such dimensions in Switzerland.

The size of the glass-house reflects the importance of plants to the business; 50% of the garden centre will be dedicated to plant sales. Plant production will continue and be expanded at the old Tann-Rüti site, providing 80% of the plants sold at the garden centre.
